LIME FOR FISH PONDS
As early as 1975, this has been studied in the Auburn University of Alabama (USA) on five fishponds that were treated with lime and five others not treated with lime but fertilized with ammonium nitrate and trisuperphosphate every two weeks. It was seen that plants growing in the ponds with lime flourished, and the fish increased by 25%. This was also tried in Malaysia as early as 1962 where the tilapia they raised in ponds increased by 10% with the application of lime.

Stop expansion to global shrimp fishpond Industries
Jakarta, August, 31 2007- since the ownership of PT Dipasena Citra Darmaja switch to Central Proteinaprima International Holding (CP Prima) in the end of May 2007, rates of global fishpond fishery industry expansion on a big scale has been more rampant. This is a biggest threat for mangrove and ecosystem. Moreover, ADB (Asian Development Bank) have already approving US$ 33, 3 million loans to ‘promote’ fishpond fishery industry on big scale in Indonesia.
M. Riza Damanik, manager of coastal and sea campaign WALHI, as well as coordinator of ASIA (Asia Solidarity against Industrial Aquaculture) told, “within two decade currently, millions hectares of mangrove forest was being conversed as big scale fishpond of fishery industry. Ironically, besides giving negative impact to environment and society around, this mega project wasn’t aimed to local fishery product necessity fulfillment, but exported to countries, such as United States, China, and Japan.”
From ecological perspective, conversion of mangrove forest and ecosystem to shrimp fishery industry, causing: (1) destruction of mangrove forest ecosystem; (2) deflation quality of waterworks and fields, which was causing life quality descent of people around, begin from basic necessities (food and housing) to health; and (3) abrasion disaster occurrence, sedimentation, and saltworks groundwater around big scale-industrial shrimp fishery location.
- Expansion of big scale-fishpond industry is certifying global imbalance. This is based on fulfillment fish demands partiality in development countries. Therefore, affectivity of global campaign STOP EXPANSION OF GLOBAL SHRIMP FISHPOND INDUSTRY for consumer, distributor, etc, in the world biggest consumer countries such as US, China, and Japan, become undoubtedly things.
- Definitely, south-north consultation is much needed, as media information exchanges related to common enemy against big scale-fishpond industrial expansion.
- Building trust between one and other to broaden political space, to fight for sustainability of global decision.
- Driving collective understanding related to the real condition faced by global society, related to sustainability of living environment and food necessity fulfilment, either in local level, national, or regional.
- Implementing collective goal to empower society’s basic rights (food and housing) fulfillment capacity.
In the end, the people waiting for their leader to work without reward and brave to enclosing a goal “create common welfare, not collective agony as nation. Not only ‘sale’ self image, but also nation image in global societies eyes, especially food sovereignty for all Indonesian people,” Riza Damanik said.
